Green University Hosts World Wetlands Day Event Focused on the Aral Sea Basin

On February 2, 2026, Green University hosted an international workshop to mark World Wetlands Day, titled “Wetlands at the Nexus of Climate, Land, and Water in the Aral Sea Basin”.

The event was organized by the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change together with UNDP under the GEF-funded Aral Sea Wetlands Project. It brought together government representatives, international organizations, scientists, civil society, and students.

Opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Aziz Abdukhakimov, Adviser to the President of Uzbekistan and Chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Ms. Akiko Fujii, UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan, and Ms. Seitova Leyli, Chairman of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Karakalpakstan.

Participants discussed the importance of wetlands, lakes, and riparian ecosystems in the Aral Sea basin for biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, water regulation, and sustainable livelihoods. Experts highlighted ongoing national efforts under the Ramsar Convention and UNDP-supported initiatives contributing to land degradation neutrality and ecosystem restoration.

The workshop strengthened dialogue between policymakers, researchers, and development partners, while increasing awareness among students and young professionals about wetland conservation and sustainable land and water management.

Green University reaffirmed its role as a platform for environmental knowledge, science–policy dialogue, and international cooperation.
