Green University Hosts Subregional Workshop on Implementing Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework
From 3–6 February, Green University is hosting a subregional workshop dedicated to supporting countries in the implementation of Target 3 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The event is organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with the support of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The workshop brings together countries of Central Asia, as well as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, and the Russian Federation, to strengthen national actions for biodiversity conservation. Participants are identifying priority measures, assessing existing gaps, and enhancing regional cooperation to expand effectively managed protected and conserved areas.
Target 3 calls for the conservation of at least 30 percent of terrestrial, inland water, and marine areas by 2030 through protected areas, other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs), and the recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ territories and traditional communities.
Experts emphasize that protected areas are essential not only for safeguarding wildlife and ecosystems but also for human well-being — ensuring access to clean water, supporting food systems, reducing climate and disaster risks, and advancing the One Health approach.
Representatives of Uzbekistan highlighted the importance of regional collaboration, noting that biodiversity conservation requires joint efforts, as natural ecosystems do not recognize national borders.
