Green University hosted the launch of the "Climate-Resilient Integrated Water Resource Management in the Zarafshan River Basin" project, supported by the Swiss government in collaboration with Uzbekistan's Ministry of Ecology and the Swiss Embassy.
The event gathered Minister of Ecology Aziz Abdukhakimov, Swiss Ambassador Konstantin Obolensky, and representatives from government agencies, international organizations, financial institutions, and the scientific community.
A.Abdukhakimov highlighted the project's importance amid climate change and growing water demands, emphasizing its role in optimizing water use and enhancing climate adaptation across five regions through new technologies and local capacity building.
The project, led by Caritas Switzerland (CACH) and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), runs until 2027 and aims to improve climate resilience and water resource management. Obolensky stressed the value of Swiss hydrology expertise and innovative monitoring systems in supporting informed decision-making.
International partners, including MeteoSwiss and Hydrosolutions GmbH, contribute to sustainable water management and regional cooperation. Agreements signed at the event set the stage for implementation.
Expected outcomes include:
- Installation of 50+ climate monitoring stations
- Automation of 30+ groundwater wells
- Training for 100+ farmers in efficient water use
- Introduction of the "Green School" concept
- Establishment of a regional data exchange platform
This initiative marks a crucial step toward sustainable water management and climate resilience in Uzbekistan.
