On December 11, 2024, the Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies, known as "Green University," hosted a significant event dedicated to International Mountain Day. This event was organized in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including representatives of the Ministry of Ecology, students, professors, teachers, environmental experts, and media representatives. The gathering underscored the importance of addressing the challenges faced by mountainous regions and promoting sustainable development.

Highlights of the Event

Keynote Speeches:
Sayora Abdullaeva, Head of the International Cooperation Department at the National Center for Climate Change under the Ministry of Ecology, emphasized Uzbekistan's dedication to protecting mountainous territories. She stated:

"The mountains of Central Asia are not only an important natural wealth but also a link between peoples and countries. Two neighboring states, Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, located in the center of the mountainous part of the region, have close ties and common interests in the field of ecology and sustainable development of mountainous territories. Cooperation in the protection of mountain ecosystems, the rational use of water resources, and the preservation of our unique natural resources is of strategic importance for both countries and the entire region. Uzbekistan is ready to continue joint efforts to address the green agenda and manage climate change processes."

Bakyt Asangul, Adviser to the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in Uzbekistan, highlighted the pressing impact of climate change on mountain ecosystems:

"Glaciers are melting in Central Asia, providing water to millions of people. This is a regional and global problem. Water scarcity will increase, creating the potential for conflict, instability, and poverty. In the 21st century, mountainous countries may face many challenges. To avoid this, we must act together. By combining the efforts of mountain countries, we can stop the degradation of mountain areas in the face of climate change."

Program Highlights:

  • A presentation on the "Mountain Agenda of the Kyrgyz Republic" and the "Five-Year Action Plan for the Development of Mountain Territories (2023-2027)."

  • Announcement of state support from 15 countries for the "Declaration on Climate Change, Mountains, and Glaciers," unveiled during the COP29 conference in Baku.

  • A preview of the Second "Bishkek + 25" Global Mountain Summit scheduled for 2027 in Bishkek.

Creative Contributions

During the event, a video presentation showcased measures undertaken as part of the "Mountain Agenda" program. Additionally, artworks created during an international plein air in the Naryn district of the Kyrgyz Republic were exhibited, capturing the majestic beauty of Kyrgyzstan’s mountain landscapes.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

The Kyrgyz Republic has spearheaded the creation of a "Mountain Cooperation Group," with Uzbekistan as one of its active participants. The group held its first meeting during COP29, focusing on developing strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change on mountainous areas and ensuring the sustainable development of these territories.

A Global Perspective on International Mountain Day

Established by the United Nations in 1992, International Mountain Day aims to highlight the significance of mountains in global ecosystems. The theme for 2024 focuses on the potential and needs of mountain communities, emphasizing innovation as a key solution to address challenges such as climate change and adaptation for resilience.

The "Green University" remains committed to fostering collaboration and innovation in addressing the pressing environmental challenges faced by mountain regions, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
