Aziz Abduhakimov, Chairman of the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, held a meeting with Yasmin Fuad, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The meeting was also attended by Dr. Bakhtiyor Pulatov, Rector of Green University.

The discussions focused on preventing land degradation and desertification in Central Asia, reducing the risks associated with sand and dust storms, and securing international financing for major environmental initiatives in these areas.

The parties agreed to develop a portfolio of regional investment projects with the support of UNCCD and its Global Mechanism. International financial institutions and climate funds are expected to be engaged to support the implementation of these projects.

Particular attention will be given to the following areas:

🔹 Developing a regional early warning system for sand and dust storms;

🔹 Restoring saxaul ecosystems in the Kyzylkum region;

🔹 Reducing dust and salt emissions;

🔹 Developing an environmental investment programme for Central Asia.

The meeting also highlighted the role of Green University as a scientific and educational centre for ecology and sustainable development in Central Asia.
