Earth water resources contain a huge amount of water (about 1.4 billion cubic kilometers). However, only 3% of this amount is freshwater. It is surprising, but only 1% of the total amount of freshwater is stored in surface freshwater ecosystems (lakes, rivers, ponds and reservoirs) [1]. Proper water quality enables the use of many ecosystem services by human beings. It also maintains the stable functioning of water ecosystems and ensures high biodiversity, both within the waterbody and in the entire landscape. Freshwaters are strictly connected with their surrounding terrestrial ecosystems and cumulate (lakes, ponds, reservoirs) or transport (streams and rivers) matter and energy from catchments.
